Yes. The opposition also has come from the materialists, who have their own doctrines and dogma. The first step in advancing spiritually is to become open like a little child. That means leaving behind all preconceptions and being open to the Higher Power and inspiration from those on the next planes of life. Until a person does that, he or she cannot grow spiritually.

Those caught up in the church or materialism are unable to open their minds like little children. They are prisoners of their paradigms. As a result, they will be closed-minded to understanding spirituality and the afterlife, just as those who were Galileo's detractors were unable to understand that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
