You asked, "Do we have the ability, or greater freedom, to do more on a higher plane than a lower one?"

Yes. We actually evolve, rather like graduation, into a higher spiritual plane. It's like evolving from being an infant to being an adolescent. It happens gradually. We are the same people we were before the transition after we make the transition to the next plane. Then, over what would be Earth time, we grow and become, with those we love who are in our soul group. We gain understanding and abilities as we grow into them.

You asked, "Does the Source have a desired direction, that we must grow, or is everything free will?"

Both. We have free will, but the direction is clearly toward greater love, compassion, oneness with the Source, and spiritual maturity. People don't devolve into separation and self-absorption. That can happen on the Earth plane because the Earth plane contaminates our view. But in the end, the eternal self always evolves toward oneness, love, and compassion.
