Many of the stories in the bible are cultural idioms. Idioms are phrases which have a figurative meaning. When taken out of context into our culture, and interpreted literally, the results are enlightening ....even funny. In the eastern Aramaic culture the expression, being swallowed by a whale, is commonly used. In the English culture the phrase, being in a pickle ,is more familiar to us. They mean the same thing....being immersed in a problem. Can you see how funny it is to take ,swallowed by a whale, literally. Would you call in the marines to help someone get out of the pickle ?Walking on water....is also an idiom, a figurative expression. In Aramaic, water has a secondary meaning ….possibilities.... So in our culture, walking on water means to be able to rise above all possible problems. I could keep going and clear up all of this confusion, but the leading expert on this topic , Mr Rocco Errico does a wonderful job . He was a student and co-worker of the late Dr George M Lamsa. Mr Errico can certainly help us better understand the meaning and intentions of the christian bible.
