You're right that the ego gets in the way. At the basis of that problem, however, is the illusion of separation. The Earth spiritual plane separates what is whole and unified in reality. The separation is necessary to grow in our desire and ability to have unity. In other words, we're struggling against the nature of the Earth plane. In the process of trying to become unified again, we learn how to love, have compassion, serve others, and listen to the guidance we receive from the Higher Power and those on the other side of life.

So, it is ego, meaning the "I" that we see as separate from other people, that causes the problems. When we win the battle against the illusion that is Earth plane separation, the ego will become unimportant.
